Before you write

Two things worth knowing

If a carrier is at risk, call instead

Mould, a tape that squeals on play, a disc shedding its surface, or anything that has been wet: telephone rather than email, and do not play it again. We would rather take the call at 4:55 on a Friday than receive it in a box in a fortnight.

If you are researching a family name

Send names, places and approximate years in your first message. It saves a round trip and lets an archivist search the full catalogue, including the fifty collections not listed publicly, before replying.
